. The first Cattle Baron's Ball was held in 1974 at the Star Brand Ranch and raised $56,000. In 2009, the Cattle Baron's Ball at South Fork Ranch raised $3.5 million. As of 2019, the Cattle Baron's Ball has raised more than $81 million for cancer research. It's become the world’s largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Given the size, time of year (autumn) and outdoor location of the event, in the past attendees and organizers often dealt with inclement weather and muddy roads on the night of the Ball. The 2009 Cattle Baron's Ball was particularly plagued with limos and other vehicles that became entrenched in the mud; it was estimated that between 500 and 1000 vehicles required towing.
