Winterfeld was born in Berlin. His parents were Karl Friedrich Gotthilf von Winterfeldt (17 May 1757 - 14 September 1824) and his wife Sophie Elisabeth Helene Wilhelmine von Köhler (28 March 1754 – 13 April 1821). Winterfeld studied law at the
