Located in the northern part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Westfield Township, Medina County - north * Guilford Township, Medina County - northeast corner * Milton Township - east * Green Township - southeast corner * Wayne Township - south * Chester Township - southwest corner * Congress Township - west * Harrisville Township, Medina County - northwest Parts of two villages are located in Canaan Township: Burbank in the northwest, and Creston in the northeast.

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1.
