. Over the course of his career, he wrote more than 800 songs. He wrote the song “Put It Off Until Tomorrow" with Parton. The song won the 1966 BMI Song of the Year award. He mentored his niece, Dolly Parton, and taught her chords on the guitar and took her around places to sing. Parton said, "He saw early on that that I was serious about my singing".
