The BKP was founded on 25 April 1990 as the Party of the Working People ( bg, Партия на трудовия народ, Partiya na Trudoviya Narod) which split from the Bulgarian Socialist Party. Renamed on 21 June 1990 the BKP proclaimed on 24 September 1990 claiming to be the successor of the original BKP. The BKP took part in the parliamentary elections of 1991, 1994 and 1997, winning the best result in 1994 with 1,5%. In 2003, joint lists with the
