In 1947, Quayle resumed his law studies and became a recipient of a Stow Prize. On 15 December 1947 he served as a barrister and solicitor for the Supreme Court of South Australia. In 1950 he joined the first parliamentary drafting division, and later served in the office of Parliamentary Counsel for Canberra from 1970 and subsequently served at second parliamentary counsel. In 1977 Quayle became the first parliamentary counsel, and later he was appointed a
