The 1994 national census reported a total population for this woreda of 99,687 of whom 49,814 were men and 49,873 were women; 4,341 or 4.35% of its population were urban dwellers. The four largest ethnic groups reported in Boreda Abaya were the Gamo (83.74%), the Welayta (10.06%), the Kachama (2.62%), and the Amhara (2.6%); all other ethnic groups made up 0.98% of the population.
