McGovern was hired by the Chicago Bears as the inside linebackers coach under new defensive coordinator Sean Desai on January 30, 2021. He was not retained following the firing of head coach Matt Nagy and the subsequent hiring of Matt Eberflus after the conclusion of the 2021 season. On February 16, 2022, McGovern re-united with Chip Kelly when he was hired as the defensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins.
