Baykar is a portmanteau of the words Bayraktar Kardeşler ( en, Bayraktar Brothers). The company presently operates under the names "Baykar Teknoloji" () and "Baykar Makina Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş." ()

The company was founded in 1984 as Baykar Makina, a
