Audubon County was formed on January 15, 1851, from sections of Pottawattamie County. It was named after
John James Audubon.

The 2020 census recorded a population of 5,674 in the county, with a population density of . 97.41% of the population reported being of one race. 94.87% were non-Hispanic White, 0.30% were Black, 1.52% were Hispanic, 0.09% were Native American, 0.09% were Asian, 0.02% were Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and 3.12% were some other race or more than one race.
