Yang was born in

Career

Yang began his teaching career as a Visiting Lecturer at Sweet Briar College in Fall of 1974. From there became a Professor at the
University of Utah The University of Utah (U of U, UofU, or simply The U) is a public research university in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the flagship institution of the Utah System of Higher Education. The university was established in 1850 as the University of De ...
in 1975. From 1989 to 1994, Yang served as the Chair of the Department of History at University of Utah. In 1995, he became the Director of Asia Studies. In 2002, he was hired by the University of Washington (UW) to serve as the Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of Studies. In 2010, he became the Chair of the South Asia Studies Center at UW. In 2015, he was named the Chair of the History Department. Yang was an editor for ''
