Yang began his teaching career as a Visiting Lecturer at Sweet Briar College in Fall of 1974. From there became a Professor at the

in 1975. From 1989 to 1994, Yang served as the Chair of the Department of History at University of Utah. In 1995, he became the Director of Asia Studies. In 2002, he was hired by the University of Washington (UW) to serve as the Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of Studies. In 2010, he became the Chair of the South Asia Studies Center at UW.
