as a Republican to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Irvine L. Lenroot, who resigned after being elected to the U.S. Senate. He was subsequently re-elected twice, serving from November 5, 1918, to March 3, 1923. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1922. Following his terms in Congress, he returned to work in banking in Grantsburg, where he died and was buried in Riverside Cemetery.
