After gaining his PhD he went on to the University of Maryland for postgraduate research. He is a Rotarian and a Past President of the Colombo South Rotary Club. He is married to Chitranganie (née Silva), present Chairperson of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and has a son and daughter. His son Jehan Mubarak has played cricket for Sri Lanka in all formats of the game. His daughter Kamakshi is currently attached to the World Bank in Washington DC.
