In 1948, Tiar was amongst the founders of Herut. In 1956, he became a member of its central committee. He was elected to the Knesset on the party's list in

1969 elections. He later left the Free Centre and returned to Herut in 1977.
Outside of the Knesset, Tiar was a founder of the Blue-White faction in the
Histadrut. He later chaired the Free Centre's faction in the trade union, and served as editor of its magazine, ''New Age''.
Between 1979 and 1982 he worked in Europe as the head emissary of the
