Early life
Manganang was born in
Tahuna,
North Sulawesi in
Indonesia.
He was born with
hypospadias, but due to the lack of medical facilities in his hometown he would only be aware of this condition later in life after his volleyball career. He was assigned as female at birth and was raised as a girl. Manganang reportedly felt different than girls of his age.
