The publication has undergone several changes throughout its history. The initial publication in 1906 was entitled the ''American Quarterly of Roentgenology'', and was officially associated with the ARRS in 1909. In 1913, journal was renamed the ''American Journal of Roentgenology'', and publication frequency was increased to a monthly basis under editor Preston M. Hickey. Hickey would remain editor-in-chief for approximately 10 years, and became a pioneering voice for evolution of radiologic education and reporting. With the advent of
