. Karliev's first film appearance was as Kelkhan in the 1939 film ''Soviet Patriots''. Other notable film roles included Nury in ''Dursun'' (1940) and Aldar Kose in ''The Magic Crystal'' (1945). His appearance in ''The Magic Crystal'' gained him a following across the Soviet Union. Karliev did not have any formal training as a director, but learned from Russian and Ukrainian directors. His first directing credit was in 1957, when he worked with
