Career

Unwin served as principal at Carlton School and Ferndale School in St. Catharines (''Toronto Star'', 20 October 1987; ''Hamilton Spectator'', 28 June 1994). He also chaired the St. Catharines Transit Commission in the mid-1980s (''Globe and Mail'', 23 March 1985). He was elected mayor in late 1994, winning election in a crowded field of nine candidates (''Toronto Star'', 13 October 1997).
