The Akron school board voted in October 2016 to build a new high school that would consolidate both Garfield and Kenmore high schools. The schools will merge and be housed at the Kenmore location for the 2017–2018 school year while the new building is constructed on the Garfield site. Construction of the new building is planned to begin in the fall of 2018, with an opening in 2022. In May 2021, it was announced that the new building at the Garfield site would be called Garfield Community Learning Center, which the school board hoped would allow the Kenmore name to stay on a building in the Kenmore neighborhood.
