He studied at Columbia University from 1939 to 1940, and then, during the Second World War, he served at the Norwegian embassy in the United States. In 1945 he became assistant secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 1948 and 1951 he was a legation and embassy counsellor in Brussels, in the United Nations delegation and in Paris. He then became deputy under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was the Norwegian ambassador to Canada from 1961 to 1966 and Finland from 1966, succeeding Ivar Lunde. From 1972 he was the Norwegian ambassador to Portugal. He was decorated as a Commander with Star of the

He died on December 5, 1996, and was buried in Oslo Western Civil Cemetery.
