center Jessie Govan, the team's top scorer, who initially had indicated after the end of the previous season that he, like Derrickson, would leave school to enter the 2018 NBA draft, had changed his mind and decided to play his senior year at Georgetown in 2018–2019.
A number of new players joined the team for the season. After sitting out the 2017–2018 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, forward Greg Malinowksi, a good perimeter shooter who previously had played for three seasons for
William & Mary – where he had shot 40 percent in three-pointers during the
2016–2017 season – became eligible to play for the Hoyas as a redshirt senior, and it was hoped that he would fill the gap left by Derrickson's early departure for the NBA.
