MTV announced on June 23 that the 1992 Video Music Awards would be held on September 9 at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and hosted by Dana Carvey. MTV cited the abilities to expand the number of performances and the size of the audience as reasons for moving to the Pauley Pavilion. Nominees were announced at a press conference held on July 7. In an effort to raise the energy of the ceremony, MTV increased the number of tickets available to the general public from 1,000 to 6,000. MTV also claimed that the ceremony was the first Video Music Awards to be completely live with no pre-recorded music.
