The by-election was caused by the death of the sitting Unionist MP,
Arthur Wellesley Willey Arthur Wellesley Willey (1868 – 2 July 1923) was an English solicitor and racehorse owner, who was briefly the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds Central. Willey was born in Leeds in 1868 and became one of the most successful s ...
on 2 July 1923. He had been MP here since winning the seat in 1922.

Willey had gained the seat from the Liberals at the previous general election;

The Unionists held the seat. The Liberal share was halved with the Labour party picking up that former Liberal vote.
