History

Ōhara Station opened on December 13, 1899, as the terminal station of the Bōsō Railway. On September 1, 1907, the Bōsō Railway was nationalized and became part of the

, which became the

(JNR) after World War II. Freight operations were discontinued from February 1, 1984. The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of JNR on April 1, 1987. On March 24, 1988, the Kihara Line was split off from the JR East network to be operated by the third-sector Isumi Railway.

In fiscal 2019, JR East's Ōhara Station was used by an average of 1,402 passengers daily (boarding passengers only). In fiscal 2018, the Izumi Railway portion of the station was used by an average of 324 passengers daily.
