Žiar nad Hronom District ( sk, okres Žiar nad Hronom) is a district in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. Until 1918, the district was part of the county of Tekov. Districts Of Slovakia
An okres (in English district) is an administrative unit in Slovakia. It is a second-tier territorial administrative unit, below a Regions of Slovakia, Region in standing, and superior to a municipality. Each district contains at least several municipalities. The cities of Bratislava and Košice are the only cities in Slovakia divided into internal urban districts, with five in Bratislava, and four in Košice. These urban districts are then further divided into smaller boroughs (which serve a function analogous to municipalities in typical districts). All other districts are larger in size and also include rural areas, and rural as well as urban municipalities. Each of these more typical districts has an urban centre serving as the seat of the district, usually the largest town (or the only town) of a given district. Kremnica
Kremnica (; german: Kremnitz, hu, Körmöcbánya) is a town in central Slovakia. It has around 5,300 inhabitants. The well-preserved medieval town built above important gold mines is the site of the oldest still-working mint in the world. Krahule
Krahule (german: Blaufuss; hu, Kékellő, until 1890: ) is a village in Žiar nad Hronom District in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. It is the only municipality in Slovakia that officially uses German along with Slovak. History The town was first mentioned in writing in 1331 as ''Blaufuß'' (literally "blue" + "foot") and was created by German miners as a '' Weiler''. Throughout its history, most of the area legally belonged to the Crown and the village was administered by a local judge. In 1601 there were 39 houses in the village. A 1640-year decree appointed Paul König as Judge, after the death of James König. The first chapel and the first school were built in 1788. In 1806 the Baroque-Classical style Roman Catholic St. John Nepomuk Church was dedicated. In 1828 there were 635 inhabitants, entirely German speakers, mostly local miners and farmers, in 57 houses. Kopernica
Kopernica (german: Deutschlitta; hu, Barskapronca) is a village and municipality in Žiar nad Hronom District in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. Etymology The name comes from ''koper'' ( Slovak koper, kôpor: dill) + ''-nica''. "The land where the wild dill grows". History The village belonged to a German language island, known as Hauerland. The German population was expelled in 1945. In 1990, Poor Clares returned to the village and established a new monastery in the municipality.
