Đurđevac is a town in the Koprivnica-Križevci County in Croatia. According to the 2011 census, there are a total of 8,264 inhabitants in the municipality, in the following settlements: * Budrovac, population 373 * Čepelovac, population 345 * Đurđevac, population 6,349 * Grkine, population 131 * Mičetinac, population 207 * Severovci, population 142 * Sirova Katalena, population 281 * Suha Katalena, population 337 * Sveta Ana, population 99 In the census of 2011, Croats formed an absolute majority at 94.92%. Picokijada
Picokijada ( Croatian: ) is a traditional cultural-tourist manifestation that has been held since 1968 at the end of June in the town of Đurđevac in northern Croatia. The event festivities last three days, with the main event being the ''Legenda o picokima'' ("Legend of the Rooster"), a remembrance of the defense of the town Đurđevac from the Ottoman Turks. The ''Legenda o picokima'' is set in the time of the attack of the Ottoman forces on the Old town Đurđevac. After the army of Ulama-beg encountered unexpected resistance and failed to take Đurđevac fortress, he decided to enact a long siege, with the goal of starving the army people that hid inside. Origins According to oral tradition, in the 16th century the Ottomans army laid siege on the town and eventually surrounded of the fortress. Boris Braun
Boris Braun (20 August 1920 – 7 October 2018) was a Croatian University professor, Holocaust survivor and member of the Jewish community in Zagreb. Early life Braun was born to Šandor and Elizabeta ( née Mautner) Braun, members of a notable and wealthy Jewish family of Đurđevac. He had a sister called Štefica. The Braun family were reputable and respected in Đurđevac, where they owned the sawmill, vineyard, mill and ice factory. His father brought electricity to the Đurđevac region and maintained the local substation. Braun's father was a close friend of Ivan Šubašić and Mate Starčević, mayor of Zagreb, both of whom participated in the hunting events organized every year at the Braun estate. Before World War II he studied agriculture at the University of Zagreb. Sands Of Đurđevac
The Sands of Đurđevac ( hr, Đurđevački pijesci, Đurđevečki peski) is an area of partially stabilized sand dunes in the eastern part of the City of Đurđevac, Croatia. The region is sometimes called the Croatian Sahara, and Bloody Sands (''Krvavi peski''). This is a protected botanical area, distinctive habitats with a large number of endemic species, unique flora and fauna, and visible forms of sand dunes, and the remains of the "Croatian Sahara". Mladen Markač
Mladen Markač (; born 8 May 1955) is a Croatian retired general. He was a Commander of Croatian Special Police during Operation Storm during the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995), and afterwards held the rank of Colonel General. Later, he was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes committed during Operation Storm by Croatian forces against the Serbs from Croatia. The Bjelovar-Križevci County ( hr, Bjelovarsko-križevačka županija; hu, Belovár-Kőrös vármegye) was a historic administrative subdivision of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. The Croatian Military Frontier ( hr, Vojna krajina or ') was a district of the Military Frontier, a territory in the Habsburg monarchy, first during the period of the Austrian Empire and then during Austria-Hungary.
