Ākenehi Hei
Ākenehi Hei (c.1878–28 November 1910), sometimes called Agnes Hei, was a Māori district nurse and midwife in New Zealand. She was the first Māori to become a qualified nurse. Nursing during a typhoid epidemic, she too caught the disease and died, while probably in her early 30s. She was born in Te Kaha, eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, probably in 1877 or 1878. She identified with the Te Whakatōhea and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui iwi. She attended Te Kaha Native School, Ōpōtiki convent school, and St Joseph's Māori Girls' College in Napier. She became an assistant nurse and dresser at Napier Hospital in 1901. She trained as a nurse and qualified in June 1908, being appointed a theatre sister at the hospital. Keen to become a district nurse, for which a midwifery qualification was required, she soon left for St Helens Hospital in Christchurch for midwifery training, qualifying in December 1908. St Joseph's Māori Girls' College
St Joseph's Māori Girls' College or Hato Hōhepa is a Catholic, integrated, boarding and day college in Taradale, New Zealand, for girls in Year 7 to Year 13. It is the largest Māori girls' boarding secondary school in New Zealand. History St Joseph's Māori Girls' College was founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. The college commenced on the property which is now Sacred Heart College, Napier when the Sisters and the Māori Missioner, Fr Reigner SM, started a little boarding school for Māori girls at first called St Joseph's Providence, which opened on 10 October 1867 with twenty pupils. The first principal was Sister Mary St John. The college usually had an enrollment of up to 60 pupils each year into the twentieth century. Whakatōhea People
Whakatōhea is a Māori iwi located in the eastern Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. The iwi is traditionally centred in the area around the town of Ōpōtiki. The traditional territorial lands extend eastwards from Ohiwa Harbour to Opape along the coastline, and inland to Matawai. These lands have long held an abundance of food resources, particularly seafood. Most of the marae of the iwi are located near the coast, historically to defend its marine resources. In the 2006 Census, 12,072 people claimed an affiliation with Whakatōhea.
