Icelandic Basketball League System
The Icelandic basketball league system, or Icelandic basketball league pyramid, is a series of interconnected competitions for basketball clubs in Iceland. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and demotion system between competitions at different levels. Men There are currently four different competitions on the pyramid - the 1st tier Úrvalsdeild, the 2nd tier Division I, the 3rd tier Division II, and the 4th tier Division III. The leagues are organized by the Icelandic Basketball Association. Alexander Ermolinskij
Alexander Pavlovich Ermolinskij (russian: Александр Павлович Ермолинский; born November 11, 1959) is an Ukraninan-Icelandic basketball coach and a former basketball player. He was an assistant coach for Nadezhda Orenburg from 2010 to 2021. He played for both the Soviet Union national basketball team and Icelandic national basketball team. Early life Ermolinskij was born in Vologda in the Soviet Union. Playing career After playing for Honvéd for two seasons, where he won the Hungarian Cup in 1991, Ermolinskij joined Skallagrímur of the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild karla in 1992. Ermolinskij joined Grindavík in 1999 and helped the club win the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2000. Einar Árni Jóhannsson
Einar Árni Jóhannsson (born 8 January 1977) is an Icelandic basketball coach. He won the Icelandic men's championship in 1998 with Njarðvík as an assistant to Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson, and in 2006 as Njarðvík's head coach. He won the Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup in 2005 with Njarðvík and was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year in 2007. Coaching career Einar served as an assistant coach to Njarðvík's men's team from 1997 to 2000 and from December 2003 to the end of the 2003–04 season. In April 2015, Einar signed a three-year contract to coach Þór Þorlákshöfn. Fjölnir ( non, Fjǫlnir ) is a legendary king in Norse mythology said to have been the son of Freyr (Frey) and his consort Gerðr (Gertha). The name appears in a variety of forms, including Fiolnir, Fjölner, Fjolner, and Fjolne. He was claimed as the progenitor of the Swedish Yngling dynasty, reigning from Gamla Uppsala. According to the ''Grottasöngr'', Fjölnir lived from the 1st century BC to the early 1st century AD. Benedikt Rúnar Guðmundsson (born 19 August 1972) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach for Úrvalsdeild karla club Njarðvík and the Icelandic women's national basketball team. Bárður Eyþórsson (born 10 January 1968) is an Icelandic former basketball coach and player. He was twice named the coach of the year of the men's Úrvalsdeild, in the 2003–04 season and in the 2005–06 season, when he coached the Snæfell. Playing career Club career Bárður came up through the junior ranks of Snæfell but moved to Valur at the age of sixteen and played his first senior match in 1986. He played 191 games in the Úrvalsdeild karla from 1986 to 2000 and averaged 14.6 points per game. National team Bárður played three games for the Icelandic national basketball team from 1991 to 1992. The Hamar men's basketball team, commonly known as Hamar, is the men's basketball department of Íþróttafélagið Hamar. It was founded on 10 September 1992. History Hamar first fielded a men's team during the 1993–1994 season when it participated in 2. deild karla. After three seasons in the 2. deild, Hamar won the league in 1997 and was promoted to 1. deild karla. During its first season in 1. deild, the team finished 5th in the league. During the summer, Hamar hired former Icelandic international player Pétur Ingvarsson as its player-coach. Behind his and star player Oleg Krijanovskij play, Hamar finished fourth in the league and made it to the playoffs. Valur Snjólfur Ingimundarson (born 20 February 1962) is an Icelandic former basketball player and coach. He played for 20 seasons in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild and is its highest scoring player of all time. He won the Icelandic championship eight times during his career and the Icelandic Cup twice. Denmark Valur was a player-coach for Odense BK from 1995 to 1998 and helped the club achieve promotion up two levels in two seasons and to the Danish top-tier league in 1997. The 1998–99 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 47th season of the Úrvalsdeild, the top tier men's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on October 1, 1998 and ended on April 22, 1999. Keflavík won its fifth title by defeating Njarðvík 3–2 in the Finals. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent once "home" and once "away" for a total of 22 games.
