Étienne Le Blanc
Étienne Le Blanc (1759 – July 11, 1831) was a merchant, seigneur and political figure in Lower Canada. He represented Saint-Maurice in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1814 to 1816. He was born in Champlain, Quebec, the son of Jean-Jacques Le Blanc and Marie Héon, Acadian exiles. In 1796, he married Josette Richerville. In 1801, he moved to Trois-Rivières Trois-Rivières (, – 'Three Rivers') is a city in the Mauricie administrative region of Quebec, Canada, at the confluence of the Saint-Maurice and Saint Lawrence rivers, on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River across from the city of .... Le Blanc was a justice of the peace and a commissioner for the relief of the insane and foundlings. He acquired much property, including the seigneury of Dutort and part of the seigneury of Champlain, as well as land in Godefroy and Roquetaillade seigneuries and in Trois-Rivières. Seigneurial System Of New France
The manorial system of New France, known as the seigneurial system (french: Régime seigneurial), was the semi- feudal system of land tenure used in the North American French colonial empire. Both in nominal and legal terms, all French territorial claims in North America belonged to the French king. French monarchs did not impose feudal land tenure on New France, and the king's actual attachment to these lands was virtually non-existent. Instead, landlords were allotted land holdings known as manors and presided over the French colonial agricultural system in North America. Manorial land tenure was introduced to New France in 1628 by Cardinal Richelieu. Richelieu granted the newly formed Company of One Hundred Associates all lands between the Arctic Circle to the north, Florida to the south, Lake Superior in the west, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east.
