Étienne Hajdú
Étienne Hajdú (born ''István Hajdú''; 12 August 1907 – 24 March 1996) was a Hungarian-born French sculptor of Jewish descent. After emigration to Paris in the 1930s, he became part of the Hungarian circle of artists and writers. He fought in the French Resistance during World War II. Early life and education Istvan Hadju was born in 1907 to a Jewish family in Torda, Torda-Aranyos County, Transylvania, Kingdom of Hungary (now Turda, Cluj County, Romania). Career He emigrated to Paris in the 1930s and became part of the Hungarian artistic circle there. World War II After the Fall of France, Hajdu became active in the Résistance movement. Numerous Jewish Hungarians, most of them artists and writers, were part of the Résistance. Many carried out their actions outside Paris, as foreigners had been formally evacuated with the outbreak of war in September 1939. Edict Of Torda
The Edict of Torda ( hu, tordai ediktum, ro, Edictul de la Turda, german: Edikt von Torda) was a decree that authorized local communities to freely elect their preachers in the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom of John Sigismund Zápolya. The delegates of the Three Nations of Transylvaniathe Hungarian nobles, Transylvanian Saxons, and Székelysadopted it at the request of the monarch's Antitrinitarian court preacher, Ferenc Dávid, in Torda ( ro, Turda, german: Thorenburg) on 28January 1568. Though it did not acknowledge an individual's right to religious freedom, in sanctioning the existence of a radical Christian religion in a European state, the decree was an unprecedented act of religious tolerance. Hungarian Jews
The history of the Jews in Hungary dates back to at least the Kingdom of Hungary, with some records even predating the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE by over 600 years. Written sources prove that Jewish communities lived in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and it is even assumed that several sections of the heterogeneous Magyar tribes, Hungarian tribes practiced Judaism. Jewish officials served the king during the early 13th century reign of Andrew II of Hungary, Andrew II. From the second part of the 13th century, the general religious tolerance decreased and Hungary's policies became similar to the treatment of the Jewish population in Western Europe.
