Érico Verissimo
Érico Lopes Verissimo (December 17, 1905 – November 28, 1975) was an important Brazilian writer, born in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Biography Érico Verissimo was the son of Sebastião Verissimo da Fonseca and Abegahy Lopes Verissimo. His father, heir of a rich family in Cruz Alta, met financial ruin during his son's youth and, as a result, Erico didn't complete secondary school because of the need to work. Verissimo settled in Cruz Alta as the owner of a drugstore, but was unsuccessful. He then moved to Porto Alegre in 1930, willing to live solely by selling his writing. There he began to live around writers of renown, such as Mário Quintana, Augusto Meyer, Guilhermino César and others. In the following year, he was hired to occupy the position of secretary of edition of the '' Revista do Globo'', of which he would become editor in 1933. Brazilian Literature
Brazilian literature is the literature written in the Portuguese language by Brazilians or in Brazil, including works written prior to the country's independence in 1822. Throughout its early years, literature from Brazil followed the literary trends of Portugal, whereas gradually shifting to a different and authentic writing style in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, in the search for truly Brazilian themes and use of Brazilian forms. Portuguese is a Romance language and the sole official language of Brazil. Linton Lomas Barrett
Linton Lomas Barrett, Ph.D. (1 September 1904 Р8 March 1972) was an influential educator, administrator, diplomat, editor, Hispanist and translator of Romance languages. Life Barrett was born in Lanett, Alabama, the son of Linton Stephens Barrett, a Baptist minister and educator, and Carrie Elizabeth Barrett, n̩e Lomas. He was known as "Lomas" to distinguish him from his father. He graduated from Mercer University, A.B. (''magna cum laude''), in 1928. Barrett married Elizabeth Elliott in 1929. She died in 1932 very soon after the birth of their only son, Arthur Lomas Barrett. His second wife was Cornelia, from whom he was soon divorced. Euclides da Cunha (, January 20, 1866 – August 15, 1909) was a Brazilian journalist, sociologist and engineer. His most important work is '' Os Sertões'' (''Rebellion in the Backlands''), a non-fictional account of the military expeditions promoted by the Brazilian government against the rebellious village of Canudos, known as the War of Canudos. This book was a favorite of Robert Lowell, who ranked it above Tolstoy. Jorge Luis Borges also commented on it in his short story "Three Versions of Judas". The book was translated into English by Samuel Putnam and published by the University of Chicago Press in 1944. It remains in print. He was heavily influenced by Naturalism and its Darwinian proponents. '' Os Sertões'' characterised the coast of Brazil as a chain of civilisations while the interior remained more primitive.
