¡Viva Zapata!
''¡Viva Zapata!'' is the second album by the American punk band 7 Year Bitch. It was released June 28, 1994, on Seattle-based C/Z Records. It was their first record to feature new guitarist Roisin Dunne who had replaced Stefanie Sargent in 1992. The album's title is in tribute to The Gits' vocalist, and friend of the group, Mia Zapata, who was raped and strangled to death in July 1993. Some of the songs on this album relate to Zapata's murder directly (such as "M.I.A.", which encourages vigilante justice for her killer) as well as Sargent's death by drug overdose ("Rock A Bye"). 7 Year Bitch
7 Year Bitch was an American punk rock band from Seattle, Washington. The band was active between 1990 and 1997 and released three albums over that time. The band formed at the same time as the emergence of the riot grrrl sub-genre, which is a sub-genre of punk music from the early to mid-1990s that emphasized the role of women in rock music. The Riot Grrrl movement began as a feminist response to the violence and misogyny that became more prominent in punk music in the mid-to-late 1980s, and 7 Year Bitch, an all-female punk band, emerged as part of that sub-genre. Valerie Agnew
Valerie Agnew is best known as the drummer of 7 Year Bitch. Agnew moved from Ohio to Seattle, Washington, where she met the musicians that would become her future bandmates: Selene Vigil (vocals), Elizabeth Davis (bass), and Stefanie Sargent (lead guitar). They formed 7 Year Bitch and signed with C/Z Records. They released their debut album '' Sick 'Em'' in 1992. While still living in Ohio, Agnew dated Steve Moriarty, the drummer for the American punk band the Gits. Additionally, Agnew was a very close friend of Mia Zapata, the band's frontwoman. In 1993, Zapata was brutally raped and murdered while walking home late at night. In response, Agnew and 7 Year Bitch released the album ''¡Viva Zapata!'', dedicated to Zapata. Elizabeth Davis-Simpson (born December 18, 1965 in the United States), is best known for being an American songwriter, as well as the bassist of the punk rock band 7 Year Bitch. Selene Vigil (born July 16, 1965) is an American singer. She co-founded grunge band 7 Year Bitch alongside Elizabeth Davis, Valerie Agnew and Stefanie Sargent in 1990; they released three studio albums before disbanding in 1997. James Dennis Carroll (August 1, 1949 – September 11, 2009) was an American author, poet, autobiographer, and punk musician. Carroll was best known for his 1978 autobiographical work '' The Basketball Diaries'', which inspired a 1995 film of the same title that starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll, and his 1980 song "People Who Died" with the Jim Carroll Band. Early life Carroll was born to a working-class family of Irish descent, and grew up in New York City's Lower East Side. Mia Zapata
Mia Katherine Zapata (August 25, 1965 – July 7, 1993) was an American musician who was the lead singer for the Seattle punk band The Gits. After gaining praise in the emerging grunge scene, Zapata was murdered in 1993 while on her way home from a music venue, at age 27. The crime went unsolved for a decade before her killer, Jesus Mezquia, was arrested in 2003. Mezquia was tried, convicted and sentenced to 36 years in prison. Life and career Mia Zapata was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and attended high school at Presentation Academy. Stefanie Sargent
Stefanie Ann Sargent (June 1, 1968 – June 27, 1992) was an American musician. She was the lead guitarist and co-founder of Seattle punk rock band 7 Year Bitch. Biography Sargent was born to Paula and Kenneth Sargent on June 1, 1968, in Seattle, Washington, where she was raised. She attended Roosevelt High School, then transferred to the Summit K-12 Alternative School, and graduated at age 16. After leaving high school, Sargent worked various jobs and traveled across the West Coast. She had been a member of several bands by 1990, when she co-founded 7 Year Bitch alongside Selene Vigil, Valerie Agnew and Elizabeth Davis. She played guitar on the band's debut record, '' Sick 'Em'' (1992). Death Sargent was found dead in her Capitol Hill apartment on June 28, 1992. After consuming alcohol and using heroin at a party, she returned home and passed out on her back. She died of asphyxiation after vomiting, having failed to wake up.
