Zoervleis
Zoervleis or Zoervleesj (Limburgian for ''sour meat'', in nl, Zuurvlees) is a regional meat dish from the Province of Limburg, a province that exists in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Zoervleis is similar to carbonade flamande and hachee and Germans might know it as Sauerbraten in some local variations. The sour refers to a process of marinading the meat, traditionally horse meat but nowadays commonly beef, in vinegar. However, despite its name the dish is sweet due to the vinegar being compensated for with apple butter and Dutch gingerbread. The dish is often accompanied by French fries. Limburgian Cuisine
Limburgisch cuisine is different from the Belgian and Dutch cuisines but also shares many similarities with these cuisines. Limburg is a little different compared to the rest of the Dutch and Belgian provinces. The landscape is hilly in the southeast (while the rest of the Dutch landscape is cultivated and flat) and the Limburgish language could be said to be a separate language rather than a dialect of Dutch. This different landscape provides the Limburgish cuisine with a lot of game meat, especially in the hunting season. The north of the Limburg is quite flat and is the largest asparagus producing area of the Netherlands. Ontbijtkoek
An ''ontbijtkoek'' (literally translated ''breakfast cake'') or ''peperkoek'' (''pepper cake'') is a Dutch and Flemish spiced cake. Rye is its most important ingredient, coloring the cake light brown. It is often spiced with cloves, cinnamon, ginger, succade and nutmeg. Several parts of the Netherlands have their own local recipe, of which the most famous is ''oudewijvenkoek'' (old woman's cake), which is mostly eaten in the northern regions, and is flavored with aniseed. Sauerbraten is a traditional German roast of heavily marinated meat. It is regarded as a national dish of Germany, and is frequently served in German-style restaurants internationally.
