Xinyao
''Xinyao'' () is a genre of songs that is unique to Singapore. It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged and rose to fame in Singapore between the late 1970s to 1980s. ''Xinyao'' songs are composed and sung by Singaporeans and it is an outlet for them to express their thoughts and feelings around themes like friendships or love stories. ''Xinyao'' is a Chinese noun comprising two words: ''Xīn'' (新) which is an abbreviation for Singapore, and ''yáo'' (谣) for song. The extended form is ''Xīnjiāpō gēyáo'' (新加坡歌谣), which simply means "Singapore songs". Xinyao can be clearly identified by its distinctive style of Mandarin genre, that is conveyed through poetic lyrics with clean acoustic accompaniments. The Songs We Sang
''The Songs We Sang'' is a 2015 Singaporean documentary directed by Eva Tang. It is about ''xinyao'', Singaporean folk music that was popular in the 1980s. Synopsis The documentary covered the last years of Nanyang University and how it affected the Chinese educated students who graduated from there. It also documented how the poetry club in Nanyang University, before the closure of the institution, branched out to song writing, influenced by Taiwan ''minyao'' (民谣), a Taiwanese folk songs movement in the 1970s and their school campus songs (校园民歌). Liang Wern Fook
Dr Liang Wern Fook (; born 1964 in Singapore) is a Cantonese Singaporean writer, musician, singer and researcher in Chinese literature and pedagogy. He was one of the pioneer figures in ''xinyao'' (Singaporean Chinese folk songs) movement in the 1980s and 1990s. Biography Early life Liang grew up in a music-loving household, along with his two younger siblings. His father, a journalist, and his mother, an acupuncturist, were always playing the records of singers like Bai Guang and Zhou Xuan. Liang received his primary and secondary school education at Catholic High School. He started taking piano lessons at the age of 10, and went on to attain a Grade 8 certificate. SPOP Sing!
''SPOP Sing!'' () is a Chinese singing reality competition broadcast by MediaCorp Channel 8. Season 1 premiered on 9 August after the broadcast of National Day Parade and ended on the live finale on 4 November at Padang. During the live finals, 18-year-old Singapore Polytechnic student Jarrell Huang (17 at the time of his audition) was announced the winner of ''SPOP Sing!'', and 21-year-old LASALLE College of the Arts student Marcus Tay was declared as a runner-up. Development The show was first revealed to the public on 22 April 2018 during the broadcast of ''Star Awards 2018'' with a teaser clip uploaded to Toggle, aimed to promote the Chinese culture, the music genre of mandopop and xinyao, and paying tribute to local singing talents of Singapore. Eric Moo
Eric Moo Chii Yuan (born 9 February 1963), better known as Eric Moo or Wu Qixian, is a Malaysian Chinese award-winning singer-songwriter and record producer. Personal life Moo was born in Mambang Diawan, Kampar, Perak in 1963. He moved to Singapore with his family when he was 8 years old. Moo is married to Taiwanese model Pang Meijun and they have two daughters. Moo's eldest daughter Yonghuan is attending Berklee College of Music. Career Moo studied in Shuqun Primary School, The Chinese High School and Jurong Junior College in Singapore. He started his first band, "Subway Band" (地下铁), in high school and began performing on stage in 1983. A year later, he released his first album, which topped Singapore's record charts for Mandopop. Wong Hong Mok
Wong Hong Mok (better known as Huang Hongmo 黄宏墨) is a xinyao (新谣 Singapore Chinese folk-pop) singer-songwriter, music producer and professional photographer from Singapore. He, along with Liang Wern Fook and others are seen as pioneers of the genre. His singing style has been described as bold and unrestrained but, unlike other xinyao singer-songwriters, writes about nature, and self. He has said that this comes from the time in his life when he spent a lot of time near the sea. Crediting his father for his love of music, he is a self-taught musician; his family was too poor for him to be able to take music lessons. Joanna Dong (Chinese: 董姿彦; born 15 November 1981 in Singapore) is a Singaporean singer, actress and host. Primarily a jazz vocalist, she is the first artiste signed to Singapore label, Red Roof Records. ''Sing! China'' (; formerly ) is a Chinese singing competition television series broadcast on Zhejiang Television. It premiered during the summer on 15 July 2016. It is a re-branded version of '' The Voice of China'', a show based on the original ''The Voice of Holland''. The National Day Parade (NDP) is an annual parade held in Singapore to commemorate its independence. Held annually on 9 August, it is the main public celebration of National Day, consists of a parade incorporating contingents of the Singapore Armed Forces, Ministry of Home Affairs, local institutions and community groups, followed by a cultural presentation culminating with a fireworks display. ''Campus SuperStar'' is a Singaporean television music competition to find new singing talent. Contestants are students from secondary schools, junior colleges and institutes of technical education. The fourth season debuted on Y.E.S. 93.3FM on 3 January 2013, and began airing on MediaCorp Channel U on 18 February 2013 and ended on 31 March 2013. The show began on 2 January 2006 and is broadcast on MediaCorp Channel U. It is a spin-off of '' Project SuperStar'', and contestants comprise students from secondary schools, junior colleges and institutes of technical education. The concept of the series is to find aspiring singers studying in secondary schools, junior colleges and institutes of technical education and put them together to compete for the ''Campus SuperStar'' title where the winner is determined by the judges and viewers.
