Wheel Hub Motor
The wheel hub motor (also called wheel motor, wheel hub drive, hub motor or in-wheel motor) is an electric motor that is incorporated into the hub of a wheel and drives it directly. History * First wheel motor concept: Wellington Adams of St. Louis first conceived of building an electric motor directly in the vehicle wheel, though it was attached via complicated gearing. The Adams patent is in 1884. *High torque low RPM wheel motor invented: The motor was incorporated into the wheel without gearing and addressed torque considerations through the use of a new high torque, low rpm motor invented by Edward Parkhurst of Woburn, MA in in 1890 (and mentioned incorrectly in Parcelle's patent as number 320,699). Electric wheel motor advantages revealed in patent:An early wheel hub electric motor was invented by Frenchman Charles Theryc and patented in 1896 as entitled Wheel with Electric Motor hub for Vehicles. In the patent he explained all advantages including no transmission l ...

Steve Burns, the CEO of Workhorse, left that company to help found the automotive startup Lordstown Motors in autumn 2019. The W-15 design was licensed in November 2019 to Lordstown in exchange for a 10% minority stake in the latter company, and Workhorse paused further development of the W-15. In the second half of December 2019, Lordstown Motors presented the first preliminary information about its vehicle. ...

Hi-Pa Drive
The Hi-Pa Drive (pronounced ''hyper'') system is an electric in-wheel motor power delivery system. Demonstration vehicles In 2006, PML Flightlink demonstrated the Hi-Pa Drive in a series-hybrid car at the British Motor Show in London, using a Mini dubbed the "Mini QED" with its in-wheel motor at all four wheels. Two other car manufacturers have also presented concept cars using this technology: Ford with a Ford F150 pick-up prototype presented at the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas and Volvo in its Volvo ReCharge. However, Volvo has stated that it will not be using the Hi-Pa Drive in the production all-electric version of the C30 ReCharge nor in its new diesel-electric plug-in hybrids due in 2012. Technology and claimed benefits *In-wheel motor: The propulsion system and development platform acts as an electric motor, generator or brake and is several times lighter, smaller and powerful than the conventional electronic propulsion systems and generators it replaces. *Power elec ...
