Polans (eastern)
The Polans (, ''Poliany'', ''Polyane'', pl, Polanie), also Polianians, were an East Slavic tribe between the 6th and the 9th century, which inhabited both sides of the Dnieper river from Liubech to Rodnia and also down the lower streams of the rivers Ros', Sula, Stuhna, Teteriv, Irpin', Desna and Pripyat. In the Early Middle Ages there were two separate Slavic tribes bearing the name of ''Polans'', the other being the western Polans (ancestors of the modern Poles also), a West Slavic tribe. History The name derives from the Old East Slavic word ''поле'', which means "field", because, according to the ''Primary Chronicle'' they lived in the fields (). In roughly 862 the Polans were attached to ancient Rus'. According Vikentiy Khvoyka, the Polanians were most likely descended from the Trypillia culture. They were one of the main tribes in Central Europe and were closely related to the Vistulans, Masovians, Czechs and Slovaks. History In the 9th century, the Polans united several West Slavic (Lechitic) groups to the north of Great Moravia. The union led by the Piast dynasty developed into the Duchy of Poland, whose name derives from that of the Polans.
