White-marked Tussock Moth
''Orgyia leucostigma'', the white-marked tussock moth, is a moth in the family Erebidae. The species was first described by James Edward Smith in 1797. The caterpillar is very common especially in late summer in eastern North America, extending as far west as Texas, California, and Alberta. Etymology The genus name ''Orgyia'' is from the ancient Greek word , órgyia - 'outstretched arms'. So named because, when at rest, the moth stretches forward its forelegs like arms. Life cycle Two or more generations occur per year in eastern North America. They overwinter in the egg stage. Eggs Eggs are laid in a single mass over the cocoon of the female, and covered in a froth. Up to 300 eggs are laid at a time. Larvae The larvae are brightly colored, with tufts of hair-like setae. __NOTOC__ Sir James Edward Smith (2 December 1759 – 17 March 1828) was an English botanist and founder of the Linnean Society. Early life and education Smith was born in Norwich in 1759, the son of a wealthy wool merchant. He displayed a precocious interest in the natural world. During the early 1780s he enrolled in the medical course at the University of Edinburgh where he studied chemistry under Joseph Black and natural history under John Walker. He then moved to London in 1783 to continue his studies. Smith was a friend of Sir Joseph Banks, who was offered the entire collection of books, manuscripts and specimens of the Swedish natural historian and botanist Carl Linnaeus following the death of his son Carolus Linnaeus the Younger. Banks declined the purchase, but Smith bought the collection for the bargain price of £1,000. The collection arrived in London in 1784, and in 1785 Smith was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. Lymantriinae
The Lymantriinae (formerly called the Lymantriidae) are a subfamily of moths of the family Erebidae. The taxon was erected by George Hampson in 1893. Many of its component species are referred to as "tussock moths" of one sort or another. The caterpillar, or larval, stage of these species often has a distinctive appearance of alternating bristles and haired projections. Many tussock moth caterpillars have urticating hairs (often hidden among longer, softer hairs), which can cause painful reactions if they come into contact with skin. The subfamily Lymantriinae includes about 350 known genera and over 2,500 known species found in every continent except Antarctica. Sable Island (french: île de Sable, literally "island of sand") is a small Canadian island situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and about southeast of the closest point of mainland Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic Ocean. ''Orgyia leucostigma sablensis'' is a subspecies of ''Orgyia leucostigma'', the white-marked tussock moth, found only on Sable Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. The subspecies was first described by Kenneth Neil in 1979. Description Physical ''O. l. sablensis'' shares many common characteristics with its mainland counterpart, ''O. l. plagiata''. Males and females of ''O. l. sablensis'' share the same antennae, palpi, genitalia and vestiture as ''O. l. plagiata''. ''Lymantria dispar'', also known as the gypsy moth or the spongy moth, is a species of moth in the family Erebidae.
