Björn Gustaf von Sydow (born 26 November 1945) is a former speaker (''talman'') of the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament. He held this office following the 2002 election, when he succeeded Birgitta Dahl, until he was replaced on 2 October 2006. A member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, he had been Minister of Defence in Göran Persson's government between 1997 and 2002, preceded by a short term as Minister of Commerce and Industry. Emil Von Sydow
Emil von Sydow (15 July 1812 – 13 October 1873) was a German military officer, geographer and cartographer born in Freiberg, Saxony. Prior to 1843 he was a geography instructor at the military academy in Erfurt, afterwards being appointed as a member of the ''Ober- Militär-Examinationscommission'' in Berlin. In 1849 he began giving instruction in geography to Prince Albert of Prussia (1837–1906), and soon afterwards gave lectures on military geography at the ''Allgemeinen Kriegsschule''. From 1855 to 1860 he performed geographical and cartological duties in Gotha, then returned to Berlin, where in 1867 he was appointed ''Abtheilungschef'' (division chief) to the Prussian General Staff. In 1870 he attained the rank of Colonel, and died three years later in Berlin due to cholera. Fredrik Von Sydow
The von Sydow murders, one of Sweden's most notorious criminal cases, occurred on 7 March 1932 in Stockholm. Events On the night of 7 March 1932, Swedish politician Hjalmar von Sydow, his cook Karoline Herou, and his maid Ebba Hamn were all found beaten to death at Sydow's town house at Norr Mälarstrand in Stockholm. The bodies of Sydow and Herou were found in Herou's room; Hamn lay dead in Sydow's room. From the outset, it was presumed the murder weapon was an iron pipe, bought the day before the murders by Sydow's son, Fredrik von Sydow, but it was later determined that a flatiron, missing after the murders, was the real murder weapon.
