Bernard Marinus Siegfried van Praag (Amsterdam, 28 February 1939) is a Dutch economist, and Distinguished University Professor at the University of Amsterdam, noted for researching the measurement of welfare, as well-being and happiness. Biography Bernard van Praag was born in 1939 into a Jewish family from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is the second son of Jonas Andries (1895-1969) and Henriette Emma van Praag (1901-?). His family went into hiding during the World War II in the Netherlands and survived The Holocaust, although many family members perished in the extermination camps Auschwitz and Sobibor. Naphthali ben Levi (Henri) van Praag (September 12, 1916 in AmsterdamNovember 3, 1988 in Hilversum) was a Jewish-Dutch writer, teacher, and religious historian, and became known also for his publications in the field of parapsychology. Childhood and education Van Praag was the son of Esther Van Praag and diamond cutter Louis (Levi) van Praag. The family was Jewish but not religious. Herman Meïr van Praag (born 17 October 1929) is a Dutch psychiatrist. He was a professor of psychiatry at the University of Groningen, Utrecht University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Maastricht University. Van Praag is considered the founder of biological psychiatry in the Netherlands. After his retirement he has written extensively on religiosity. Marga van Praag (born 14 September 1946) is a Dutch journalist and television presenter. Van Praag attended the academy of dramatic art in Amsterdam, and worked for VARA television from 1968 onwards. She was the host of the television programs ''Fanclub'' and ''De Jonge Onderzoekers'' (The Young Researchers), and did editing work for the shows ''Twee voor Twaalf'' (Two to Twelve) and ''Hoe bestaat het?'' Siegfried Emanuel van Praag (8 August 1899 in Amsterdam – 16 March 2002 in Brussels), was a prolific Dutch writer of more than 60 books. Life He was born to Jewish parents and was the youngest of three sons. His father, Herman van Praag, worked in the diamond trade. His mother's name was Grietje de Jongh.
