Valda Osborn
Valda Rosemary Foggin ( Osborn; 17 September 1934 – 28 December 2022) was a British figure skater. She was the 1953 European champion and World bronze medalist. Osborn represented her country at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway, where she placed 11th. Early life Osborn was born in Wembley, Middlesex on 17 September 1934. During the Second World War, she moved to Richmond (then in Surrey), and lived close to Richmond Bridge, a short walk to Richmond Ice Rink. She had private tutors for her schooling. Career Osborn started skating, aged 2½, at Wembley Ice Rink. She was taught by Arnold Gerschwiler, who was her only coach during her entire amateur career. At age 5, Osborn won her first competition for "Under Sixes". During the Second World War, the Wembley rink was closed to save electricity. Valda James
Valda James (born 1928) is the former mayor of Islington. She was the first black woman elected to Islington Council and the borough's first black mayor. Life James was born in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, and moved to England in 1961, as part of the Windrush generation. Following the end of her marriage, James raised her children as a single parent, 'an experience that later informed her work on the Social Services committee.' James worked first in catering and dressmaking, in order to support herself and her family, before becoming a nurse with the British Red Cross for eight years. James was elected to Islington Council in 1986, and became mayor two years later. In order to take up the post, James took early retirement from her existing job, affecting her pension, and was additionally unable to claim councillors' attendance allowances because mayoral duties did not leave enough time to carry out the functions required of a councillor. Valda Emily Unthank (née Garnham, 1909 – 21 June 1987) was an Australian cyclist who held numerous records for long distance cycling, mostly set during 1938-39, most notably the women's seven day record. Valda was born in 1909 as "Emily Garnham" at Lilliput, Victoria to William and Edith Garnham (née Blackburne). In 1933 she married John Leslie Roberts "Jack" Unthank, a Councillor at the Victorian League of Wheelmen. Little is known of her early years until her first reported cycling record in 1935, covering the from Prahran to Wonthaggi in 5 hours 5 mins. What first established Unthank's reputation though was the ride in October 1938 from Adelaide to Melbourne covering in 33 hours 43 minutes. Unthank was sponsored by Austral bikes, a brand within the Malvern Star group, and the rides were organised by Jack O'Donohue, publicity manager for Bruce Small Ltd. Valda Valkyrien (born Adele Frede; September 30, 1895 – October 22, 1956) was a Danish silent film actress. Early life and career Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, Valkyrien was born Adele Frede; although she may have been a student at the Royal Danish Ballet, she was neither a prima ballerina nor premiere danseuse, as she later claimed. She married Danish nobleman and author, Baron Hrolf von Dewitz, and in 1912 began appearing in motion pictures for Nordisk Film productions of Copenhagen, where she was a bit part player or, at best, a supporting cast member in at least six silent films, including one feature-length production, but not a star.
