Urchfont
Urchfont is a rural village and civil parish in the southwest of the Vale of Pewsey and north of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, about southeast of the market town of Devizes. The hamlet of Cuckoo's Corner is in the northwest of the village; the parish includes the hamlets of Wedhampton () and Lydeway (). The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 1,075. Urchfont village lies mostly to the north of the B3098 road which connects Market Lavington to the A342 Devizes-Upavon road. The parish narrows as it extends southeast onto Salisbury Plain and into the military training area. History There are remains of several bowl barrows on the downland in the south of the parish, and evidence of a late prehistoric or Roman field system on Penning Down. Medieval strip lynchets can be seen on the north-facing slope of Urchfont Hill. Callum Urch
Callum Urch (born 21 July 1984) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club, Kangaroos in the Australian Football League. After attending Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook, Urch made his debut against the Sydney Swans in Round 19 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2004. He was part of the 40 point 3-quarter time deficit revival that saw the Kangaroos come back in Glenn Archer's 250th game to win against the odds. After playing just the 8 games over three years, and no games in 2007, he was delisted from the Kangaroos list at the end of the 2007 AFL season. He was then recruited by Victorian Football League club Williamstown Seagulls, Williamstown, before moving to Darley in the Ballarat Football League in 2009. Edith Urch
Edith Laura Urch (c. 1915 – January 1978), known to her friends as Urchie, was an English nurse and charity worker who founded the Ladyeholme Housing Association, a charity for homeless people, and ran it as general secretary until her death. Urch was born in Russia, although her parents were both from Somerset. Her father, Reginald Urch, was Professor of English at the University of Moscow. Shortly after the Russian Revolution in 1917, her father was arrested and incarcerated in the Lubyanka Prison, and she and her mother hid in a tiny peasant cottage just outside the city. Eventually, in 1920, her father was released, and the family returned to England. She remembered her experiences of poverty in Russia all her life, and these contributed to her founding of Ladyeholme. Her father later returned to the area as Russian and Baltic correspondent of ''The Times'', based in Riga, Latvia. Reginald Oliver Gilling Urch (13 May 1884 – 15 May 1945) was an author and journalist specialising in Russian affairs. He witnessed and described several major events in the first part of the 20th century. Biography He was born at Mark, near Highbridge, Somerset. Graduating in Slavonic studies from London University, he expanded his education in Germany and Russia.
