UPhongolo Local Municipality Elections
The uPhongolo Local Municipality council consists of twenty-nine members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Fifteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in fifteen wards, while the remaining fourteen are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. UPhongolo Local Municipality
uPhongolo Local Municipality, is a local municipality in the northern area of Zululand, in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. In 2007, the uPhongolo Municipality contained 154 rural shops, 124 schools, 27 hotels, resorts or conference facilities, 15 clinics, 12 recreational facilities, 6 community halls, 4 post offices, 2 police stations, and 2 law courts. The municipality is largely composed of traditional areas, with tribal land patterns and high density rural settlements. 82% of the population lives in rural areas. Geography The N2 national road corridor passes through the uPhongolo area as a national link between Gauteng and the Richards Bay complex, and on to Durban in the south. Independent Democrats
The Independent Democrats (ID) was a South African political party, formed by former Pan Africanist Congress member Patricia de Lille in 2003 via floor crossing legislation. The party's platform was premised on opposition to corruption, with a mixture of liberal principles and strategies for improving equity. The party's strongholds were the Northern and Western Cape. United Christian Democratic Party
The United Christian Democratic Party is a minor political party in South Africa. It was founded by Lucas Mangope, leader of the Bophuthatswana bantustan in 1997, as a successor to the Tswana National Party, and led by him for the first fifteen years of its existence. Mavis Matladi was elected as its leader on 29 January 2011 after the expulsion of Mangope. Matladi died in December 2011. Isaac Sipho Mfundisi was elected president on Saturday, 7 January 2012. Mfundisi was succeeded by the current President Modiri Desmond Sehume who was elected in the Federal Congress in 2019. Most of the party's support comes from the North West province (where the old Bophuthatswana was located), and it has very little presence elsewhere in the country. The African Transformation Movement, popularly known as ATM, is a political party in South Africa. It is led by Vuyolwethu Zungula, leader and party president. It was formed with the backing of the South African Council of Messianic Churches in Christ (SACMCC), which together are supported by millions of congregants. Policy In January 2019, it was announced that the party, if brought to power, would return the death penalty and scrap low pass marks in public schools. Mzwanele Manyi, chief of policy and strategy for the ATM, further states that the party plans to bring about capital punishment regardless of the constitution not consenting to such matters. Manyi claims that this is due to South Africa being abused as a "haven" for people who commit crimes and need a place to evade the law. Abantu Batho Congress is a South African political party established by former Jacob Zuma backer, Philani 'PG' Mavundla. The party describes itself as an Afrocentric, Pan-Africanist and womanist revolutionary movement. African Mantungwa Community
African Mantungwa Community is a minor political party in South Africa. The party advocates land expropriation without compensation, free education, and support for traditional leaders. It is based in Kwazulu-Natal, and has close ties with the Mantungwa community. It contested in the 2016 municipal election, as well as a number of local government by-elections in Kwazulu Natal, all without success. African People's Convention
The African People's Convention is a South African political party formed by Themba Godi, former deputy leader of the Pan-Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) via floor-crossing legislation, on 4 September 2007. Godi defected along with the PAC's only two provincial representatives, Eastern Cape MPL Zingisa Mkabile and Gauteng MPL Malesela Ledwaba. Godi is the current leader of the APC. The party retained its seat in the National Assembly in the 2009 elections, although it lost both of its representatives in the provincial legislatures of Gauteng and Eastern Cape. It retained its seat in the 2014 election, but lost it in the 2019 election. Like the PAC, the party's ideology officially appeals to "Africanists, Pan Africanists and socialists". The National People's Front (NAPF) is a South African political party formed in 2018 by Bheki Gumbi, former national deputy chairperson of the National Freedom Party (NFP). The party is campaigning on a platform of fast-forwarding land expropriation, strong borders, priority for South Africans over foreign nationals, and on abolishing "Roman laws". The party contested the 2019 general election, failing to win any seats. Nongoma Gumbi won a seat in the 2021 local government election in Nongoma after the party finished with just under 1% of the vote, earning a single list seat. Gumbi briefly held the balance of power in the council after the defeat of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) candidate in a ward 20 by-election, leaving the council split between 22 seats for the IFP/ Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coalition, and 22 seats for the NFP/African National Congress (ANC) coalition.
