The Great White Way (1924 Film)
''The Great White Way'' is a 1924 American silent comedy film centered on the sport of boxing. It was directed by E. Mason Hopper and produced by Cosmopolitan Productions and distributed through Goldwyn Pictures. The film was made with the cooperation of the New York City Fire Department. The film stars Oscar Shaw and Anita Stewart. It was remade twelve years later as ''Cain and Mabel'' with Marion Davies and Clark Gable. Plot As described in a film magazine review, ambitious press agent Jack Murray introduces two of his clients, Follies dancer Mabel Vandegrift and prize fighter Joe Cain, to each other and they fall in love. Zenas Winsor McCay ( – July 26, 1934) was an American cartoonist and animator. He is best known for the comic strip ''Little Nemo'' (1905–14; 1924–26) and the animated film ''Gertie the Dinosaur'' (1914). For contractual reasons, he worked under the pen name Silas on the comic strip ''Dream of the Rarebit Fiend''. From a young age, McCay was a quick, prolific, and technically dextrous artist. Fay Barbara King (March 1889 – presumed dead fter 1954 was an American illustrator, journalist, and cartoonist. Some of her work represents an early example of autobiographical comics. King worked for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century (at least from 1912 to 1937), moving to New York City in 1918. She was one of the popular Jazz Age cartoonists appearing in the 1924 comedy ''The Great White Way''. Biography King was born in Seattle, Washington in March 1889, to John and Ella King. She was raised in Portland, Oregon, and went to college at Seattle University. William Morgan DeBeck (April 15, 1890 – November 11, 1942), better known as Billy DeBeck, was an American cartoonist. He is most famous as the creator of the comic strip ''Barney Google'', later retitled ''Barney Google and Snuffy Smith''. The strip was especially popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and featured a number of well-known characters, including the title character, Bunky, Snuffy Smith, and Spark Plug the race horse. Spark Plug was a merchandising phenomenon, and has been called the Snoopy of the 1920s. DeBeck drew with a scratchy line in a "big-foot" style, in which characters had giant feet and bulbous noses. Joseph Edward Humphreys (October 17, 1872 – July 10, 1936) was an American boxing official and announcer. He was one of the most popular fight announcers from the turn of the 20th century up until the 1930s. Olin Ross Howland (February 10, 1886 – September 20, 1959) was an American film and theatre actor. Life and career Howland was born in Denver, Colorado, to Joby A. Howland, one of the youngest enlisted participants in the Civil War, and Mary C. Bunting. His sister was stage actress Jobyna Howland.
