Herman Frederik Carel Ten Kate (artist)
Herman Frederik Carel, or Herman ten Kate, the Elder (16 February 1822 – 26 March 1891) was a Dutch artist known for his paintings, drawings, and prints. He was notable as a teacher, and renowned for his watercolours and paintings of historical genre with emphasis on military figures. His contemporary artists who also followed on the same genre of paintings were David Bles, Alexander Hugo Bakker Korff and Charles Rochussen. He received royal patronage under King William III of the Netherlands. Early life He was born in The Hague on 16 February 1822, the son of Jan Herman ten Kate (1789–1860), and Johanna Henriette Adriana de Witte van Haemstede (1792–1858). He was a student of Cornelis Kruseman from 1837 and 1841. After his education he traveled to Belgium, Germany, Italy and France, during 1841–42. Herman F.C. ten Kate, the younger (7 February 1858 – 3 February 1931) was a Dutch anthropologist. Ten Kate's anthropological knowledge gathered over several decades of travel was considered as "embryonically modern" attesting to his scientific stature. He held the view that the science of anthropology of non-Western cultures provided insight into deficiencies in Western culture. A linguist, ten Kate was fluent in eight languages. He published articles and reviews in journals; his prodigious work covered publications under 150 titles. He was a member of several expeditions, including the Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition. Jan Jakob Lodewijk ten Kate (December 23, 1819December 24, 1889) was a Dutch divine, prose writer and poet. Life He was born at The Hague. He started in life as a lawyer's clerk. It was his friend, Dr Heldring, pastor at Hemmen, in Gelderland, who, discovering in Ten Kate the germs of poetical genius, enabled him to study theology at the University of Utrecht (1838–43). Having completed his studies, Ten Kate became pastor at Middelburg, Amsterdam, and other places, meanwhile developing well-nigh ceaseless activity, both in prose and lyric poetry. Among his prose works may be mentioned the travel papers (Rhine, 1861; Italy, 1857–62), ''Christelijke Overdenkingen'' ("Thoughts of a Christian," 1840-52), and other religious studies. His early poetry was in the main original. Lambert ten Kate (23 January 1674 – 14 December 1731) was a Dutch linguist. Specialised in comparative historical linguistics, he was also a well-known art collector. Early life Ten Kate was born in Amsterdam to Mennonite parents. He studied at the Haarlem Collegium Physicum and was a pupil of Adriaan Verwer. Career Early in his career, ten Kate was a merchant, as a partner with his father, Herman ten Kate (1644–1706). The ten Kates engaged in the business of trading in corns, but it was not a preference for the younger man. He eventually left the family business, giving his attention to linguistics, especially, historical-comparative work, etymology, methodology and the standard language.
