Turon, Kansas
Turon is a city in Reno County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 309. History Turon was founded in 1886. It was incorporated as a city in 1905. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Herington through Turon to Pratt. In 1888, this line was extended to Liberal. Later, it was extended to Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. It foreclosed in 1891 and taken over by Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which shut down in 1980 and reorganized as Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad, merged in 1988 with Missouri Pacific Railroad, merged in 1997 with Union Pacific Railroad. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island". Geography Turon is located at (37.807415, -98.427061). Turon (; also known as ''lumpiang saging'' (Filipino for "banana ''lumpia''"), is a Philippine snack made of thinly sliced bananas (preferably ''saba'' or Cardaba bananas), dusted with brown sugar, rolled in a spring roll wrapper and fried till the wrapper is crisp. Turon can also include other fillings. Most commonly jackfruit (''langka''), but there are also recipes with sweet potato ''(kamote),'' mango ''(mangga)'', cheddar cheese and coconut ''(niyog)''. The word ''turon'', though etymologically Spanish in origin, is in no relation to the Spanish candy turrón (an almond nougat confection). While turon is both crunchy and chewy, it is most commonly consumed during ''merienda'' meaning snack time or for dessert. Turon River, a perennial stream that is part of the Macquarie catchment within the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the central western district of New South Wales, Australia. Partly situated in the Turon National Park, the river is host to numerous recreational and tourist activities such as horse riding, gold panning, canoeing, camping, and seasonal fishing. Geography The Turon River rises on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the Capertee Valley, west of Ben Bullen, and flows generally to the north west and then west, joined by the Crudine River, and then forms its confluence with the Macquarie River south west of Hill End; dropping over the course of its length. The upper reaches of the Turon River are partly bound by Turon National Park, established in 2002, while the lower reaches open onto private grazing property. Turon National Park
Turon National Park is located along a section of the Turon River in central New South Wales, Australia. Proposed as an area worth protecting in 1983, the park was not established until 2002. The park is north-west of Sydney, approximately west of Capertee, near Lithgow, New South Wales. Turon National Park was one of the sites of the 1851 gold rush, and remains from this era are still evident. Pasture land cleared in the past remain obvious. Sheoak grows along the river and a variety of gums cover the slopes. A large variety of native birds live within the park, and red wallabies spend the day on the sandstone tops and descend at dusk to the valley. The park is at a relatively high altitude (valley floor at around above sea level, the tops at around ) due to the park's location within the Great Dividing Range. In Polish folklore, Turoń is a festive monstrosity in the form of a black, horned and shaggy animal with a flopping jaw. Its appearance can be noticed at folk events during the period after Christmas, yet most likely in times of Carnival and before Lent begins. The name is derived from the word ''tur'', meaning aurochs. Customs The person that played Turoń covered himself with a cloth sheet or sheep skin, holding a wooden pole in front of him, topped with a bull's head with flopping jaw, horns (sometimes real ones – bovine – or simply, wooden ones), the head covered with rabbit skin or some other animal skin.
