Top Of The Pops
''Top of the Pops'' (''TOTP'') is a British record chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly between 1January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969 and the Top 40 from 1984. Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be with You" was the first song featured on ''TOTP'', while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform with "I Wanna Be Your Man". Stanley Appel
Stanley Appel (9 June 1933 – 15 May 2023) was a British television producer and director of light entertainment at BBC Television, most synonymous with his overhaul of ''Top of the Pops'' in the early 1990s, which saw the brief end to BBC Radio 1 DJs hosting the show. Life and career Stanley Appel was born in Stepney, London on 9 June 1933. Prior to joining light entertainment he was a senior television studio cameraman for many years. Appel became best known for his work on light entertainment at the BBC, most notably his reworking of ''Top of the Pops'' during the 1990s. He was also the producer of the popular game show, ''Blankety Blank'', during the Les Dawson era. Appel also produced the Marti Caine series, Leo Sayer series, Paul Daniels series, Lulu (singer), Lulu series, and the Mike Yarwood series. Johnnie Stewart
Lorn Alastair "Johnnie" Stewart (7 November 1917 – 29 April 2005) was a British television producer who worked for the BBC. In 1964, he co-created and co-produced the long-running music programme ''Top of the Pops'' with Stanley Dorfman and Bill Cotton. Stewart co-produced ''Top of the Pops'' with Dorfman until 1969, when Stewart was replaced by Mel Cornish as co-producer. Early life Born as Lorn Alastair Stewart, in Tonbridge, Kent, Stewart was the son of Dr Haldane Campbell Stewart, who was also musical but in a different sphere – he was organist and choirmaster at Magdalen College, Oxford, the director of music at the Tonbridge School, Kent, and also notable as a cricketer at Kent County Cricket Club. ''TopPop'' was a Dutch television programme. It was the first regular dedicated pop music television series in the Dutch language area. The Netherlands broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly from 22 September 1970 to 27 June 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted for its first fifteen years. The creator and original director of ''TopPop'' was Rien van Wijk. Many other directors followed: Egbert van Hees, Geert Popma, Henk Renou, Chris Berger, Jessy Winkelman, Wim van der Linden, Bert van der Veer and Charly Noise. Pictures Of Matchstick Men
"Pictures of Matchstick Men" is the first hit single by British rock band The Status Quo. It was released on 5 January 1968. The Status Quo version The song reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart, number eight in Canada, and number 12 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, becoming their only top-40 single in the United States. Francis Rossi confirmed on DVD2 of the Pictures set, that it was originally intended to be a B-side to "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe", but it was decided to swap the B-side and the A-side of the single. There are two versions, one in stereo and another in mono, with significant differences: the original single was in mono and has the trademark wah-wah guitar in the breaks between lyrics, but this is omitted in stereo. The song opens with a single guitar repeatedly playing a simple four-note riff before the bass, rhythm guitar, organ, drums and vocals begin. Status Quo (band)
Status Quo are a British rock band. The group originated in London and was founded in 1962 by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster while they were still schoolboys. After a number of name and lineup changes, which included the introduction of John Coghlan (drummer), John Coghlan in 1963 and Rick Parfitt in 1967, the band became The Status Quo in 1967 and Status Quo in 1969. As of 2022, the group have been active for 60 consecutive years (despite announcing a breakup in 1984, they played Live Aid the following year and resumed normal activities in 1986). Snow Patrol
Snow Patrol are a Northern Irish–Scottish Rock music, rock band formed in 1994 in Dundee, Scotland, consisting of Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Nathan Connolly (guitar, backing vocals), and Johnny McDaid (piano, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals); Lightbody is the band's sole remaining original member. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the Extended play, EP ''Starfighter Pilot'' (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Jonny Quinn to the lineup as drummer.
