The Calders
The Calders is a residential neighbourhood in Edinburgh, Scotland – not to be confused with the Calders of West Lothian aka West Calder, Mid Calder and East Calder, three separate villages. It is sometimes considered to be part of Wester Hailes or Sighthill, Edinburgh, Sighthill, larger developments to its south and east respectively. From 2007 to 2017, it fell within the Sighthill/Gorgie (Edinburgh ward), Sighthill/Gorgie multi-member ward of the City of Edinburgh Council administration along with Sighthill, but following a boundary change has been in the Pentland Hills (Edinburgh ward), Pentland Hills ward since then, along with Wester Hailes. To the west of the neighbourhood is the A720 Edinburgh city bypass road, with Heriot-Watt University's main campus at Riccarton, Edinburgh, Riccarton beyond. A71 Road
The A71 is a major road in Scotland linking Edinburgh with Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. It adjoins the Livingston Bypass A899. It runs south west from Edinburgh for approximately 70 miles, through Saughton, Wilkieston and south of Livingston, Whitburn and Wishaw, then by way of Overtown, Garrion Bridge, Stonehouse, Strathaven, Darvel, Newmilns, Galston, Hurlford and Kilmarnock to Irvine on the North Ayrshire coast. Formerly a trunk route from the east to the west coast of Scotland it has since been downgraded to a mix of primary and secondary routes. From Edinburgh to Darvel, it is now a secondary route, in a poor state of repair in some places. But, from Darvel to Irvine, it has retained its primary route status. Emporis was a real estate data mining company with headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. The company collected data and photographs of buildings worldwide, which were published in an online database from 2000 to September 2022. Emporis was acquired by CoStar Group in October 2020. Canmore (database)
Canmore is an online database or index to information on over 320,000 archaeological sites, monuments, and buildings in Scotland. It was launched by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland in 1997 as the Computer Application for National MOnuments Record Enquiries. Canmore provided access to the National Monuments Record of Scotland (NMRS), which was founded in 1966 as an amalgam of the important archive of plans and photographs held by the RCAHMS and the Ministry of Public Building and Works. The NMRS was further developed with material from the Scottish National Buildings Record, the National Art Survey, the Ordnance Survey and the Scottish Office Air Photographs Unit. Union Canal (Scotland)
The Union Canal, full name the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal, is a canal in Scotland, running from Falkirk to Edinburgh, constructed to bring minerals, especially coal, to the capital. It was opened in 1822 and was initially successful, but the construction of railways, particularly the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, which opened in 1842, diminished its value as a transport medium. It fell into slow commercial decline and was closed to commercial traffic in 1933. It was officially closed in 1965. The canal is listed as three individual scheduled monuments by Historic Scotland according to the three former counties, Midlothian, West Lothian and Stirlingshire, through which it flows. Bankhead, Edinburgh
Bankhead is a non-residential area of western Edinburgh, Scotland. It borders the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720) and Hermiston Gait ( M8 motorway terminus) to the west, the Calders neighbourhood to the south – accessed via a pedestrian underpass, Sighthill to the east, and South Gyle/Edinburgh Park to the north. It is mostly occupied by a large industrial park. Amongst the companies here, and Burtons Biscuits have a large presence. |
