The tautog (''Tautoga onitis''), also known as the blackfish, is a species of wrasse native to the western Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia to South Carolina. This species inhabits hard substrate habitats in inshore waters at depths from . It is currently the only known member of its genus. Barlett (1848) wrote, "[Tautaug] is a Native American word, and may be found in Roger Williams' ''Key to the Indian Language''." The name is from the Narragansett (tribe), Narragansett language, originally ''tautauog'' (pl. of ''taut''). It is also called a "black porgy" (''cf.'' Japanese black porgy), "chub" (''cf.'' the freshwater chub), "oyster-fish" (in North Carolina) or "blackfish" (in New York/New Jersey, New England). The tautoga (pronounced ) is considered the most formal and restrained style of Rotuman dance, usually seen performed in large festivities or ceremonies (called ''kato'aga'', a term summing up all traditional Rotuman ceremonies), or in public opportunities to showcase Rotuman culture. The tautoga style can be seen as comparable to the Tuvaluan fatele or Tongan lakalaka, and the "toga" sound to the word alludes to such an origin. Wrasse
The wrasses are a family, Labridae, of marine ray-finned fish, many of which are brightly colored. The family is large and diverse, with over 600 species in 81 genera, which are divided into nine subgroups or tribes. They are typically small, most of them less than long, although the largest, the humphead wrasse, can measure up to . They are efficient carnivores, feeding on a wide range of small invertebrates. Samuel Latham Mitchill (August 20, 1764September 7, 1831) was an American physician, naturalist, and politician who lived in Plandome, New York. Early life Samuel Mitchill was born in Hempstead in the Province of New York, the son of Robert Mitchill and his wife, Mary Latham, both Quakers. He was sent to Scotland and graduated in 1786 from the University of Edinburgh Medical School with an M.D., his education being paid for by a wealthy uncle. Returning to the United States after medical school, Mitchill also completed law school. As a lawyer, he oversaw the purchase of lands in western New York from the Iroquois Indians in 1788. The fiddler crab or calling crab can be one of the hundred species of semiterrestrial marine crabs in the family Ocypodidae. These crabs are well known for their extreme sexual dimorphism, where the male crabs have a major claw significantly larger than their minor claw, whilst females claws are both the same size. The name fiddler crab comes from the appearance of their small and large claw together, looking similar to a fiddle. A smaller number of ghost crab and mangrove crab species are also found in the family Ocypodidae.
