Surfing Australia is the governing body for the sport of surfing in Australia. History The Australian Surfriders Association was founded in 1963, and was renamed Surfing Australia in 1993. In 2013, for its 50th anniversary, Surfing Australia named Mark Richards the 1963-2013 most influential surfer in Australia. In 2014 it inaugurated the Australian Boardriders Battle, and renewed its partnership with the Edith Cowan University to further develop the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC), the world's first facility dedicated to the development of elite surfers and coaches. Rip Curl Pro
The Rip Curl Pro, formerly the Bells Beach Surf Classic, is a WSL (formerly ASP) World Tour surfing competition held in and around Torquay, Victoria and sponsored by surf company Rip Curl. The event is based at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia. The event winner is awarded the prestigious 'Bell' trophy. The song "Hells Bells" by AC/DC is played every morning before the first competition. History The competition has been held annually at Easter time at Bells Beach, Victoria continuously since 1962, becoming a professional competition and sponsored by Rip Curl in 1973. The contest has had various sponsors over the years, including in 1984 Australian rock band, Australian Crawl. Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew (born; 30 November 1954) is an Australian world champion surfer, surf sports innovator, community advocate and politician. Bartholomew is the former CEO and president of the Association of Surfing Professionals and the creator of the Dream Tour format of professional competition surfing. The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was originally known as the International Professional Surfing founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events. Bob McTavish
Bob McTavish (born 1944) is an Australian surfboard designer and member of the surfing hall of fame. Overview Bob McTavish is an Australian surfboard designer who is often credited with the invention of the V-bottom surfboard and was one of a number of pioneering surfer/shapers considered instrumental in the development of shortboard surfing. It has been suggested that without his contributions, the revolutionary nature of shortboard surfing wouldn't have been as effective. Early life Born in Mackay, Queensland in 1944, McTavish began surfing at the age of twelve. He dropped out of school at 15, and moved to Sydney. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was a Hawaiian competition swimmer who popularized the sport of surfing. A Native Hawaiian, he was born to a minor noble family less than three years before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. He lived to see the territory's admission as a state, and became a United States citizen. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming, winning medals in 1912, 1920 and 1924. Noosa Festival Of Surfing
The Noosa Festival of Surfing was established in 1992 at Noosa, Queensland by members of the ''Noosa Malibu Club'', as an amateur surfing competition called the ''Noosa Malibu Classic''. It allowed club members to invite friends to surf Noosa's right-hand point breaks and the event's popularity among competitive longboarders gave the club a chance to take the event to a higher level. In 1996 a professional division was introduced and prompted the name change to ''The Noosa Festival of Surfing'' (NFoS) in 1998.
