"Stick to sports" is a phrase used in sports journalism and scholarship, primarily in the United States, to indicate the view that professional athletes should refrain from political or cultural commentary. In the United States, the notion that athletes should avoid commenting on social issues has waxed and waned over time. Jesse Owens represents one early example of an athlete who refused to "stick to sports". In the 1960s and 1970s, athletes including Billie Jean King, Muhammad Ali, and Jackie Robinson frequently made public statements about the news of the day. A later generation of athletes, however, increasingly refrained from such commentary. Sports journalism started in the early 1800s when it was targeted to the social elite and transitioned into an integral part of the news business with newspapers having dedicated sports sections. The increased popularity of sports amongst the middle and lower class led to the more coverage of sports content in publications. The appetite for sports resulted in sports-only media such as ''Sports Illustrated'' and ESPN.
